Cliff Eberhardt Red House recording artist Cliff Eberhardt knew by age seven that he was going to be a singer and songwriter. As a child Cliff taught himself to play guitar, piano, base and drums. In his teens Eberhardt was fortunate enough to live close to the Main Point (one of the best folk clubs on the East Coast), he cut his teeth listening to the likes of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, and Mississippi John Hurt - receiving an early and impressive tutorial in acoustic music. At the same time, he was also listening to great pop songwriters like Cole Porter, the Gershwins, and Rodgers and Hart, which explain his penchant for great melodies and clever lyrical twists.  A driving force of the Greenwich Village New Folk movement and well known among his peers, Cliff’s songs have been covered by the likes of Ritchie Havens, Buffie St. Marie, Erasure, Lucy Kaplansky and the folk superstar band "Cry, Cry, Cry" (Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky).

Kelly Joe Phelps As a tunesmith, Kelly Joe Phelps already has a proven track record, with a catalogue of original songs infused with what The Washington Post calls “poignancy, passion and spirituality.” But on his sixth studio album, the Portland, Oregon-based musician still felt the need to retrofit new elements into his songwriting. “Part of it is shifting focus, away from music heavily driven by guitar to music that’s more driven by the song,” explains Phelps. “The record is stripped back in relation to the last two studio efforts, balancing combinations of solo, duo, trio and quartet and bridging the gap between my early solo recordings and later band outings.”

Chuck Pyle Learn fingerstyle accompaniment on acoustic guitar - using bass lines, counterpoint and musical hooks - and the exercises to support them.  Chuck Pyle has several right-hand rhythm guitar patterns unique to his picking style. These patterns emulate piano and even the feel of a whole rhythm section. There will be some hand-outs but a recording device is recommended. Come with your guitar in concert tune and ready to play with the group.

Joel Tepp is a familiar face as a multi-instrumentalist and accompanist at Northwest concerts, and beyond. He has regularly added his slide guitar, harmonica and clarinet stylings to the music of Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, Danny O'Keefe, Iain Matthews and many others. In addition, his recording credits include Jerry Garcia, Crazy Horse, Wendy Waldman, John David Souther, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, several major films, television shows and much more. In his early years, he learned from the masters, not through recordings but by accompanying them on tour and gaining his musical knowledge face to face, one on one. His teachers and departed friends include Johnny Shines, Bukka White, Earl Hooker, John Lee Hooker, Sippi Wallace, Magic Sam and Shakey Jake.

Doug Mcleod is one of the last remaining Bluesmen who learned from the old masters, lived the music, survived the life, and now continues to carry forward that valuable tradition. Within the blues world, MacLeod is known for his quality recordings which feature superb songwriting, guitar wizardry, warm soulful vocals, wit, and unforgettable live performances.

Keith Greeninger and Dayan Kai
Guitar and vocal workshop

We'll explore percussive guitar techniques, as well as finger picking and strumming styles, to offer the singer, the songwriter, or the accompanist a wider range of tools to help perform with others or support their own songs. We'll also explore singing lead and harmony vocals looking at the power of phrasing and tone.

We will have the ability to divide the class as well if some students would like to explore Dayan's multi intramentalist approach to supporting the singer songwriter
